- I see that IMail is available by 10, 25, 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2500, or unlimited mailboxes. What is defined as a mailbox?
- User or mailbox is an account within IMail. The number of mailboxes you’ll need is based on the number of users you’ll have using the system. In IMail, a "user" is an actual email account that is capable of receiving email messages. Aliases are not considered users. Aliases only act as forwarders to real email accounts and are not counted towards the license. (Also, "Root" is NOT counted as a user.)
In Ipswitch Instant Messaging, a user is an ID that is capable of logging on to the server to send IM messages. Even though all your users may not be active at once, if the ID exists in your users database, then the ID is counted as a user.
In WorkgroupShare, a user is an account that you create in WGS Manager that is capable of sharing or viewing other user's information

- Does your IM system plug into Yahoo, AOL, etc.?
- No, and that’s by design. Our IM system transmits securely and logs all activity, and it would not be able to do that if it interoperated with other IM systems. Even though smaller businesses have important relationships with suppliers and vendors, most of their messages are sent within the company. If secure instant messaging is a requirement for working with outside vendors, you can add them to your Instant Messaging user base.

- How do I manage the mail/collaboration system?
- All the administration and maintenance can be done from any web browser using our consolidated administrator utility. Since email is so critical, we also recommend that you deploy network monitoring to keep track of the health of the mail system and the server on which it resides. - How long will it take me to install and configure it?
- In most cases, it should take under an hour to get up and running. If you have a large or complex installation planned, consider having an authorized Ipswitch reseller help you with the work.

- How do I back up the system?
- To back up user account information, you must back up the registry. To back up emails and instant messages, just copy the appropriate directories. No finicky databases here, just files.

- Can I keep copies of all the messages?
- Yes. IMail Server now offers full litigation and e-discovery with our archiving solutions. IMail also has an option to copy all mail (in and out) to a storage mailbox. In addition, IMail Server can be set to keep copies of all IM conversations for a configurable timeframe.

- Can I use mobile devices, such the Blackberry or iPhone, to retrieve email?
- Yes. Smartphones and similar devices with email clients are able to communicate with IMail over POP3 or IMAP protocols. In addition, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync® is availble for mobile devices supporting the protocol.

- Can I use an Apple/Mac/UNIX/Linux/Atari to get my email?
- Yes. IMail is compatible with a wide range of mail client software on many platforms, and the Web Messaging and Web administration clients run on Internet Explorer and Firefox on various operating systems. In addition, IMail’s web components now work on the Mac Safari browser.

- Can I use mail clients other than Outlook to get email?
- Yes. IMail is compatible with any standards-based email client on Windows or any other OS.

- Can I use mail clients other than Outlook to do shared calendars and contacts?
- No. IMail Server's shared calendar and contacts capability works only with MS Outlook 2000 and newer versions of Outlook. (Not with Outlook Express, not with Outlook for Mac)

- Do I need to use IIS? What about .NET?
- Yes. IMail requires IIS and the .NET 2.0 framework to run the web-based administrator and web mail client. Both are free downloads if they are not already included in your windows server installation.

- I already have Anti-Virus on every desktop in the company, why should I pay for AV on the mail server?
- Anti-Virus protection on the server is not a substitute for protection on the desktop; it’s a supplement and an additional layer of safety. You can’t always be sure that end-users keep their desktops up to date, and you can’t be sure that they won’t access email from machines other than their regular desktops. Although lots of malicious code comes in by email, there are many other ways in. Therefore we believe that having AV at the mail server level and the desktop level is the best plan for total protection. Ipswitch recommends the use of IMail Anti-virus powered by BitDefender for protection at the server level.

- Is Windows Vista a supported platform?
- Windows Vista is supported for the Ipswitch Instant Messaging Client and the Workgroup Share Client plug in for Outlook.

- How do I activate IMail Anti-Virus by BitDefender?
- During the purchase process you’ll be provided a license key to enter during the install of BitDefender.

- What happend to Premium and Standard Anti-virus?
- Premium Anti-virus and Standard Anti-virus have been renamed to IMail Anti-virus by Symantec and IMail Anti-virus by BitDefender, respectively. The functionality and pricing remain the same.

- What happens when my evaluation period ends?
- After the evaluation period expires, the Queue Manager service will stop and can not be restarted, preventing delivery of any email. Evaluation versions can be converted to a fullly licensed version of IMail. Please contact an account manager for purchase options.

- What languages are supported by IMail?
- The Web Mail system has templates available in English, French, Spanish, Japanese, and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
Additional Language can be created. Please download the White paper.

- Can I have a Global Address Book?
- Yes, using the Workgroupshare Component of IMail Server gives you this functionality to have a centralized Address Book for all of your WGS users.

- Your system requirements are very vague – what’s the best server configuration for my needs?
- With company environments being so different it is hard to say what the exact specifications will be required for your company. We’ve documented some performance data but your mileage may vary.

- Can Outlook Calendars be seen in the Web Mail interface?
- Yes, shared Calendars and Contacts can be accessed via the web mail interface in IMail Server.

- How do I know how long I have remaining on my evaluation?
- When logging into the Web Administration interface a banner will appear telling you the amount of time remaining. After activation you’ll see an about box with additional information including your activation key.

- What is the difference between IMail Express, IMail Server, and IMail Premium?
- Please view the product comparison chart.
