All versions of IMail Server include the following services:

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is an Internet standard protocol for transmitting email across IP networks. Most email systems that send mail over the Internet use SMTP to send messages. Transmission can be from mail client to server or from server to server.

POP3 (Post Office Protocol) is an Internet standard protocol that is used to retrieve email messages from the mail server. With POP3, messages are downloaded from the server to the user's computer and stored on the hard drive. Once messages are retrieved, they are deleted from the server.

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol ) is another Internet standard protocol that is used to retrieve email messages from the mail server. With IMAP, a copy of the messages are stored on the server and not removed unless they are specifically deleted by the user. IMAP allows users to create and manage multiple folders on the server and move messages between them.

LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is an Internet protocol that email and other programs use to look up information from a server.

Webmail - Webmail is an email client that is accessible on the web via HTTP. IMail's customizable Web messaging system includes the following features:

  • HTML/Plain Text Message support
  • Supports all popular browsers including Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari
  • Vacation message and auto responders
  • Spell checker
  • Available in eight languages
  • Web Messaging Lite available - low-bandwidth web client for quicker access for users on slow connections such as dial up.

Other mail clients - IMail users can also send and receive email using any standards-based client, including Microsoft Outlook®, Outlook Express®, Mozilla Thunderbird®, or Eudora®.

List Server - Gives the administrator options for sending to large groups of people

Basic anti-spam protection includes the following types of spam filters:

Blacklist - blocks messages that are sent from a "blacklist" or list of known spammers

Bayesian - a statistical technique of spam filtering using the probability that particular words will frequently show up in spam but are seldom found in legitimate email.

Phrase - searches for common spam phrases within the body of email messages. If a message contains one of the phrases in the spam list, it is identified as spam.

Sender Policy Framework (SPF) - an email validation system that uses sender authentication to stop incoming mail from forged email addresses.

*Commtouch Anti-Spam with Edge Protection is available with IMail Premium. Using a multi-layered approach, Commtouch detection is able to block 98% of spam, phishing and malware while maintaining the industry's lowest false positive level.

SSL/TLS Encryption - provides endpoint authentication and securely communicates all information (email, instant messages, and other data transfers) as it passes from one server to the next. The encryption protocol prevents eavesdropping, message forgery and tampering. IMail supports SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security) encryption.

SMTP Auth - an access control mechanism in which the client logs in to the mail server during the process of sending mail. Servers such as IMail that support SMTP Auth can be configured to require clients to use this mechanism and therefore ensuring that the true identity of the sender is known.

Dictionary Attack - a technique for defeating an authentication mechanism by trying to determine its decryption key or passphrase by searching likely possibilities. IMail can determine if and when someone is trying to use a dictionary attack to uncover passwords at the server level and can block the IP address that is attempting the attack.

Password strength - Ability to set required strength of password for users ranging from weak to extreme

Number of attempts before lockout - Ability to set the number of incorrect password attempts before user is locked out of account

Number of lockouts before suspension - Ability to set the number of lockouts allowed before an account is suspended

DomainKeys - a domain-level email authentication standard that uses public/private key encryption and DNS (Domain Name System) to prove the legitimacy and contents of an email message.

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) - very similar in functionality to DomainKeys, with an enhanced standard that provides more flexibility and security. IMail Server supports both signing and verification for DomainKeys and DKIM.

A Service Agreement entitles you to:

  • 12 months of unlimited industry-leading tech support
  • Tech support is available through both email AND telephone
  • 12 months of free product upgrades and patches

Instant Messaging is a real-time text-based communication tool that can be used by two or more users. IMail Server Instant Messaging runs inside the firewall for secure conversations and has the ability to log and record all sessions. Documents and files can be included in conversations and spell check runs in real-time, prior to messages being sent.

Collaboration incorporates the Exchange-like ability to securely share Outlook data, such as calendars, tasks, contacts, distribution lists, notes, and email among IMail users via Outlook, the IMail Web Client or compatible mobile devices*. Users are also able to schedule meetings within the organization using free-busy lookups.

* Requires purchase of Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync® license and a mobile device supporting the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync® protocol.

Commtouch Premium Anti-spam protection is able to block over 98% of spam, phishing and malware while maintaining the industry's lowest false positive level. Commtouch operates in real-time, eliminating the need for updates, and uses a multi-layered approach with both Edge Protection and Recurrent Pattern Detection™ (RPD™).

Edge Protection - Malicious senders are blocked during the SMTP transaction before data is received, saving on both bandwidth and infrastructure costs.

Recurrent Pattern Detection - RPD technology analyzes large volumes of Internet traffic collected by worldwide partners in real-time rather than evaluating each individual message resulting in instant protection from new outbreaks - far ahead of software updates.

A user or mailbox is defined as an account within IMail that is capable of receiving email messages. Aliases are not considered users, rather they simply forward messages to real email accounts. There is complete flexibility to increase user count as needs change. User level options are 10, 25, 100, 250, 500, 1,000, 2,500 and unlimited users.

Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync® is a protocol that allows users to sync their mobile devices with their email, calendar, contacts and tasks. Licenses are designed to be flexible and can be purchased on a per user basis. Available for all mobile devices supporting the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync® protocol including Windows Mobile devices and the iPhone™.

Anti-virus software is designed to prevent malware from infecting your computer systems. Malware can damage a system by corrupting programs, deleting files, and draining memory. Malware can also replicate itself without the knowledge of the owner/operator of the system. IMail Anti-virus powered by BitDefender® offers automated virus protection for both ingoing and outgoing email traffic.

Email Archiving is the process of saving and protecting the data that is contained in email messages. A true message archive enables messages to be searchable for eDiscovery so they can be retrieved quickly at any time and also maximizes storage space by compressing the messages that are archived. Archiving is becoming more and more common as State and Federal regulations, such as HIPAA and SOX, continue to enforce compliance with archiving policies across several industries.

Ipswitch IMail Server offers MailArchiva Enterprise Edition, an installed archival application.
