Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics are winning the battle against spam and e-mail viruses through the successful implementation of Ipswitch’s e-mail Web messaging and anti-virus solutions. Ipswitch’s IMail Server and IMail Anti-Virus block an average of 60 viruses and 500 pieces of spam daily for the Celtics, making e-mail a more viable and user-friendly communication tool for its onsite staff and mobile team of coaches and scouts.

“IMail has re-established e-mail as a reliable and secure method of communicating for the Celtics,” said Jay Wessel, director of technology for the Celtics. “We’ve had zero incidence of e-mail virus infection since deployment more than a year ago and the system has maintained 24/7 uptime. Ipswitch’s solutions deliver what they promise, which enables us to focus resources and attention elsewhere. IMail Server has been running on its own since day one and simply doesn’t crash.”

The Celtics selected IMail based on its business value and low total cost of ownership. Unlike competitive solutions, such as Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes, IMail Server is designed for easy installation and management, which allowed the Celtics to minimize costs and avoid hiring a full-time email administrator. Typically, a small IT staff can save a minimum of $40,000 a year by deploying IMail.

With more than 80 e-mail users sending and receiving up to 3,000 pieces of mail daily, the Celtics required a scalable e-mail solution that could grow and adapt with the needs of its organization and provide reliable service to its mobile staff on the road approximately 85 days a year. IMail Server’s Web messaging functionality provides users quick and easy access to their e-mail messages via a Web browser, with security ensured through IMail’s 128-bit SSL encryption. The customizable nature of the solution provides administrative flexibility and allows the Celtics to better execute joint promotion activities through the simple creation of vanity e-mails for use by outside organizations such as the Girl Scouts of America (girlscouts@celtics.com).

In addition, IMail Server allows for the easy integration of third-party add-on tools. The Celtics, for example, have adopted Computerized Horizon’s Declude Virus and Declude JunkMail to further control and manage its high volume of mail.

“The Boston Celtics are among a growing list of organizations to implement Ipswitch solutions not merely from a feature/functionality perspective, but based on our ability to deliver value and business benefit,” said Brian Landrigan, vice president of sales at Ipswitch. “Our solutions free companies from their IT infrastructure so they can focus efforts elsewhere. The Celtics required ‘smart’ customer service they wouldn't get from Microsoft and an e-mail system they did not need to think about. Our ability to deliver on these prime objectives is what has maintained our profitability and will continue to build our success for years to come.”
